Historically I am not into photos. We didn’t even hire a professional photographer for our wedding. And honestly, I probably never would have considered family photos if my dear friend, Lily Glass, wasn’t an amazing photographer. Recently she came over during one typically chaotic morning and took some photos of the three of us.
That morning Lewie was running around in only his diaper and socks and sometimes a cowboy hat he likes to wear. I didn’t even have an outfit picked out for him. My hair was in a ponytail and the only makeup I had on was some pink lipstick I hurriedly applied as an afterthought. Bryce was up late and up early and was especially tired. When Lily arrived, I was feeling a bit insecure about all this and more.
But a few days later when Lily sent me the photos, I was simply amazed at what she saw through her camera. I saw a squirming baby that can’t hold still, a messy house and yard, and equally messy parents, but she was able to see all the lovely, little candid moments of our life and, the most astounding part, capture them forever.
One of the reasons Lily is such a talented photographer is because she immediately makes you feel comfortable. She gave us gentle directions, but allowed us do our typical day with Lewie, which includes playing on the bed, exploring outside and lots of Bryce throwing Lewie in the air.
I guess I could have planned the photos better. I could have woken up at 5 a.m. and at least showered and put on makeup. I could have swept the backyard and picked up the balloons on the floor. I could have planned our outfits and had Lewie dressed when Lily arrived. But I didn’t, and I’m so glad I didn’t. Because this is what our lives look like right now and then I wouldn’t have some of my favorite pictures.
Now I’m convinced that every family should do candid family photos in the place they call home. I’m sold for life and am already looking forward to next year’s shoot. How about you? Do you have yearly family photos taken?
P.S. If you’re in Los Angeles, I obviously highly recommend Lily Glass. You can find more examples of her work and rates here.
